Our Prediction:

Derrygonnelly will win

Derrygonnelly – Roslea Match Prediction | 23-09-2019 09:30

All the stadiums are in the heart of cities which will also be better for fans and, as Philip Brown CEO of the IRFU put it, not the big shiny new stadia on the outskirts of cities. So, I dont see it as a complete death nail to our chances. Im sure that any issues identified with the stadiums can be easily resolved before any deadline and the stadiums identified are all likely to hold smaller group games in the tournament. This is important because although the other countries have larger stadia, ours will be full to the brim and more conducive to better atmospheres.

Belcoo v Tempo = The game of the day in division 1 with both sides having strong aspirations to get off to a good start. Belcoo have Jimmy McGrath in charge from the off this year and will be keen to become more involved in the top 4, they looked solid in the Ulster Club league with 3 wins in 4 games. The core of the 2012 double winning team is still around but with a number of players based in England we may not see the best of Tempo till further into the Summer. Tempo have Colm Bradley in charge and some encouraging displays in a number of challenge games have gave the Tempo players confidence to bring into the opening day of the season.

Again, could more have been done by the Ireland bid team or local politicians? The Casement Park issue also threw up a number of questions. The review team highlighted that it was a risk because the planning permission for the renovation of the stadium still hadnt been received. The staging of World Cup games could be hugely beneficial for Belfast and surrounding area economies. Could a fully functioning Stormont government helped reduce this risk and perhaps helped lobby officials to safeguard against such an event arising?

The Harps are well backboned by a strong County contingent and will be confident of leaving Emmet Park with two opening day points. Lisnaskea v Derrygonnelly = Lisnaskea are back in division 1 after relegation in 2013 and will be keen to get off to a good start with Peter Clarke back at the helm. Derrygonnelly have topped the league for the past two seasons but will be bitterly disappointed they havent collected a league title since 2002.

Devenish v Donagh = Devenish have Michael OBrien back in charge and the Devenish squad overall wont have changed much from 2014. Vincent OBrien is a loss with the talented defender now travelling but talented young players such as Thomas McHugh, Ruairi Maguire and JJ OBrien will help the West Fermanagh club. Donagh are being tipped by many neutrals to make a top 4 spot once again and with players like Pat Cadden, Eamon Maguire and a host of youthful talent coming through those tips seem pretty accurate.

Ederney v Maguiresbridge = A small bit of history will be made on Sunday afternoon with Maguiresbridge entering division 1 for the first ever time under Colum Courtney. With injuries on a few key playersthey will be hopeful of getting the injury front cleared up. Ederney are always strong on home soil and with the likes of the McCusker brothers, Martin McGrath and Chris Snow it would take a strong performance from Maguiresbridge here to get a win.

Every time one of their players or management team speaks to the media they mention the tiredness and difficulty they are experiencing. I do have some sympathy for them, in that the club has been playing hurling or football championship games every weekend for nearly three months. I also have to question Slaughtneils mentality at the moment. I also think that the Ulster council were very unfair by making them to play last Saturday night, only six days after the Ulster Hurling club final especially when the match wasnt even shown on TV.

Derrygonnelly were the first Fermanagh champions had to win in Ulster since 2013 when Roslea reached the semi-final stage. Last weekend saw a couple of shocks in the Ulster Club Championship quarter finals, with Kilcar destroying Scotstown on Sunday and Derrygonnelly cutting Armagh Harps down to size on Saturday night. They will now play Cavan Gaels in the semi-final next weekend, with the winners set to take their place in the final at the end of November. All in all, it was a positive weekend for Ulster football with counties with less history in the competition winning.

I think Slaughtneil are there for the taking and Kilcar will have no pressure on them as they have already achieved their goal in winning the Donegal championship. Slaughtneil will again be favourites but I think Kilcar have a massive opportunity to cause an upset. They ruthlessly took Scotstown apart last weekend; and arguably have one of the most in-form forwards in Ireland with Paddy McBrearty leading the line. In the other semi-final, Slaughtneil will take on Kilcar which promises to be cracker.
