Our Prediction:

Novak Djokovic will win

Novak Djokovic – Matteo Berrettini Match Prediction | 10-11-2019 09:00

Berrettini has played a lot of matches this year, and has spent a far greater amount of time on court than the Spaniard at Flushing Meadows, especially as Rafa missed out the second round altogether. This is less nailed on than many might think but a few factors should fall in Nadals favour, disregarding his elite ability. Nadals experience, also, will come to his aid, and with the likelihood of a tiring Daniil Medvedev awaiting him in the final, will see this as his last great opportunity to win a fourth US Open title.

till recently that is. This is when he went on to beat Andy Murray, Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas to clinch the China Open last week. And now with a straight-set win over Pablo Carreno-Busta, Thiem at least looks good to make the quarter-final. Question is if Basilashvili can lift his own game and push him into a third set.

However, the second half of the season has not proven successful for the Austrian, with a sustained bout of illness not aiding his cause. The veteran Richard Gasquet, meanwhile, has had his fair share of injury troubles this year. Thiem has had his fair share of successes this year, not least winning his first Masters 1000 titlein Indian Wells and reaching a second final at Roland Garros. He did win the title in Kitzbuhel at the last clay-court event of the year, but lost in the first round at Wimbledon and in Cincinnati and New York.

But having got some matches under his belt in recent months, including an impressive run to the semifinals in Cincinnati, he may feel confident of doing some damage on the fast Asian and European courts during the closing weeks of the season. Make no mistake, on his day he is still a very dangerous player, who has twice beaten Thiem without reply. Two years on from their last meeting, most likely not. But will he be able to stand up to the power of Thiem, who has the motivation of knowing a run to the final will secure his spot in London?

But he has already picked up 37 wins this season and is up to #13 in the ATP rankings. The Italian has defeated Jan-Lennard Struff and Christian Garin, saving all four break points faced in two straight-sets wins. Matteo Berrettini is a relatively new face on the ATP tour and can therefore go a little under the radar. Berrettini bases his game around a powerful one-two serve-forehand punch, and it has been working extremely well for him thus far on the fast courts in Shanghai.

Second seeded Rafael Nadal isnt expected to run into too many trouble against Italys Matteo Berrettini when the two of them face off in the 2019 US Open semi-final but the discrepancy in the pedigree of the two players also allows us an interesting insight into some of the markets available. Latest Rafael Nadal v Matteo Berrettini predictions & US Open tips and picks have been placed below.

Harsh: Medvedevs run, though impressive, could have been anticipated, Dimitrov has been a surprise package. Both players have big serves, but Medvedev is more consistent from the baseline and his linear shots causing considerable damage as Stan Wawrinka found out. Barring any fitness issues, Medvedev has the game and the belief to reach his maiden Grand Slam final. These two have split their previous two meetings, but that was back in 2017 and the Russian has come a long way since then. The Bulgarian is stepping it up in the big moments and it has been paying off.

The big-serving John Isner is a threat to almost anyone on tour. The American will thus be glad to be playing this match on a fast surface, but even that may not help him enough. Djokovics return is peerless and that allows him to neutralize Isners atomic serve, without which Isner cannot hope to live with the best in the sport. The reason is not too hard to find. But in recent years, there are few who have more success in rendering the giant American harmless than Novak Djokovic.

The Russian is fast becoming an elite player (and a better known villain) but his physical condition remains at least something of a limitation to his performance. Coming closer than ever to reaching his potential, Dimitrov will keep the mojo flowing and edge Medvedev. Steen: Ive been wrong to bet against Medvedev all tournament but Im simply going to double down here. Dimitrov comes off the emotional high of beating Federer for a famous win.

If Tsitsipas can take the ball early, as he does at his best, expect the Greek to win in two tight sets. With both players at their best when playing on the front foot and both the owners of striking one-handed backhands, this match promises to be easy on the eye. Dusan Lajovic has also had one of the best years of his career, reaching his first Masters 1000 final in Monte Carlo, losing to Fabio Fognini. But Lajovic, who is at his best on the clay, is susceptible to being rushed in quicker conditions.

But Djokovic looks like he means business in Shanghai and that spells trouble for Isner. But Djokovic is a cut above the Australian and the Frenchman. Isner will surely be hoping to get Djokovic into a tiebreak, having won six of the ten he has contested against the world #1. Isner has also been playing well. Djokovic defeated Denis Shapovalov comfortably in his opening match at the Shanghai Masters, defending superbly throughout. He is yet to face a break point and thundered a combined 37 aces past Alex De Minaur and Lucas Pouille.

Novak Djokovic shouldnt have too many problems getting the better of the world number John Isner when they meet in their third round match at the Shanghai Masters. After all, when one looks at their head to head, its 9-2 in favour of Djokovic but more vitally, Isner hasnt defeated the world number since 2013. Their last meeting came at the ATP Finals last year and Djokovic was a 6-4, 6-3 winner a telling result against a player who usually pushes most of his sets into tie-breakers.

This match looks set to go the distance and at least one tiebreak seems likely. But Monfils is unquestionably in better form and has a healthy advantage in this pairs head-to-head. Gael Monfils, in contrast to the struggling American, has been in good form recently, reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open, although he may have been disappointed to lose to Albert Ramos Vinolas in straight-sets in his second outing in Zhuhai last week. Expect him to extend at the China Open.
